39 Months Maximum Certificate Validity
The whole Internet community is awaiting for upcoming changes in the world of SSL Certificates: starting March 1, 2015, certificates will have a maximum validity of 39 months.
The above mentioned criteria were established by the Certificate Authority and Browser (CA/B) Forum who develop and establish requirements for the Certificate Authorities to issue publicly trusted certificates.
The change will affect the behaviour of CAs and the way browsers display certificates issued for the validity period longer than 39 months.
Validity Period:
Certificates issued after 1 March 2015 will have a Validity Period no greater than 39 months. Due to this fact, we are introducing the following changes at Namecheap starting February 26, 2015:
If you purchase a 4- or 5-years SSL certificate before Feb. 26, 2015 and activate it before the end of the month, the certificate will be issued for the full duration and you won’t be immediately affected.
If you purchase a 4- or 5-year SSL certificate before Feb. 26, 2015 but fail to activate it before the end of the month, you’ll need to contact Support to refund the certificate and purchase a 3-year cert instead.
If you reissue a 4- or 5-year SSL certificate after March 1, 2015, the reissued certificate will get a maximum validity of no more than 39 months. However, you will be able to reissue it again before this 39-month validity period expires to get the additional months remaining in your SSL. (If you start a reissue for a certificate that is valid for more than 39 months, its validity time will be updated to 39 months during reissue, but the extra time available with the initial purchase can be obtained with future reissues of the same certificate. For example, a 5-year certificate purchased on February 25, 2015, is valid till February 25, 2020. Then, in April 2015 it is reissued and the certificate duration time gets shortened to 39 months with a new expiration date of May 2018. If the certificate is reissued again before the new expiration date, then the initially removed 21 months will be added back to the certificate, on the condition that duration of the newly provided certificate is not longer than 39 months.) If the certificate is not renewed before expiration date, the remaining time will be lost without any refund.
